Muhammara (Red Pepper Dip) Recipe

This roasted red pepper dip is light, flavorful and amazing. We eat it with raw veggies and whole wheat pita. We also mix it with beans, veggies + pasta or farro for a cold salad and use it as a sandwich spread. Muhammara is great instead of or alongside hummus.


  • 4-5 roasted red peppers - jarred and rinsed or fresh peppers roasted for 30-40 minutes in a 500 degree oven, then place in paper bag to cool and remove skin, seeds, and stem.

  • 1 cup walnuts

  • 1/4 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs

  • 1 tsp. smoked paprika -sweet or hot

  • 1 tsp. cumin

  • 1 tbsp. turmeric

  • 1/2 tsp. salt - or to taste

  • 1/4-1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper - optional

  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice or apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tsp. agave nectar or honey (Note: Traditionally pomegranate molasses is used. Great, but not required.)

  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste


  • Grind walnuts to a fine meal in a food processor

  • Add red peppers and process thoroughly

  • Add remaining ingredients and process thoroughly

  • Taste and adjust salt or spices as needed

  • Serve topped with freshly ground black pepper to maximize benefits of turmeric
